Art is a "Problem".
Thus, There is Certainly a Solution.

Why could the contemporary art of America realize such a dynamic development in the 1960's? One of the most principal answers is "of course, because there was E.A.T. in that country."

E.A.T. is an association of the artists and the scientists, where the pioneers of the art can solve their own difficulties through meeting those of the science and the technology.

It is famous that this miraculous organization was supported by Billy Kluver, a charismatic and gifted scientist from Sweden. Billy said, "you can solve any problems, if you precisely figure them out." This advice of his was meant to be a great encouragement toward the artists and to give a powerful message such as follows:

Art is a "problem" which you are able to face squarely only when you have a clear awareness of the issues.
Where there is no "problem", there should be neither solution nor development of the art. As long as the art is a "problem", you can share it with others and work together to solve it. Your problem can be everybody's, if it is a real "problem".

Billy equally treated young artists, giving his visiting cards and saying, "call me whenever you have a problem." But when he asked them what exactly their problems were, he was definitely strict. When he saw them forming hasty conclusions, he seriously refused them and cried, "No! No! No!"

Billy lived in a chaotic environment where various problems and information were complicatedly piled up. And at the same time, his life was surrounded by his innumerable "inventions" that were the keys to these solutions. His inventions were full of "gifts" that led to strong ties between people. Without these "gifts", there would be no history for us.
